What we supply

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate in bulk, against a written specification.

Sodium lauryl sulphate is the high-foam anionic surfactant of the fatty-alcohol family. It is made by sulphating lauryl alcohol — itself derived from coconut or palm kernel oil — and neutralising with caustic soda. What formulators buy it for is foam volume, wetting speed and detergency at low cost; what they design around is that it is a more aggressive surfactant on skin than its ethoxylated cousin.

The distinction from SLES matters commercially. SLES is the same molecule with ethylene oxide units inserted, which makes it milder, thickens readily with salt and is supplied as a 70 per cent paste or a 28 per cent pourable liquid. SLS is not ethoxylated, so the 1,4-dioxane by-product route that applies to SLES does not apply to it — that contaminant arises from ethoxylation. It ships dry at 90 to 95 per cent active matter in needles or powder — far cheaper to freight, since you are not paying to move water. Needles flow and dissolve predictably in a mixing vessel; powder is finer, dissolves faster and dusts more. The grades we carry are in the table above.

Grades & packing

What goes out, and how it is packed.

These are the formats we most commonly supply. Other grades, packing sizes and pack marking are available — ask at the enquiry stage.

Applications

Where sodium lauryl sulphate earns its place.

Toothpaste

The standard foaming agent in dentifrice, at low inclusion levels.

Detergent powders

Active surfactant and foam booster in laundry and dishwash powders and bars.

Emulsion polymerisation

Emulsifier for PVC, acrylic and styrene–butadiene latex production.

Textile processing

Wetting agent, scouring aid and dyeing auxiliary.

Personal care

Shampoo and body-wash bases, usually blended with milder co-surfactants.

Industrial cleaning

Degreasers, foaming cleaners and fire-fighting foam concentrates.

Handling & storage

What to get right before the load arrives.

Worth reading before you order rather than after. If any of this is a problem at your site, tell us — it usually changes what we would quote.

Site notes

  • SLS causes serious eye damage (GHS Eye Dam. 1, H318), irritates skin (H315), may cause respiratory irritation (H335) and is harmful if swallowed (H302). The dust is the main route of exposure — handling without extraction produces coughing within minutes. Use local exhaust ventilation at tipping and charging points, tight-fitting chemical goggles rather than safety glasses, gloves and a dust mask.
  • Treat it as a combustible organic dust. Earth and bond transfer equipment, control ignition sources and do not let dust accumulate on ledges or hot surfaces.
  • Transport classification varies by producer. Some SLS safety data sheets classify the material as a flammable solid (H228) and consign it as UN 1325, flammable solid, organic, n.o.s., Class 4.1, packing group III; others declare it non-dangerous for all modes. Confirm the classification on the safety data sheet and shipping document for the specific lot rather than assuming it is unregulated — this matters most for air and sea export.
  • Store in a cool, dry, covered store with bags sealed. SLS picks up moisture and cakes, and caked needles are difficult to dose accurately.
  • It hydrolyses back to lauryl alcohol and sulphuric acid under acidic conditions and heat, and because the acid released catalyses further hydrolysis the reaction accelerates once it begins. Hold formulations near neutral and avoid prolonged heating of acidic solutions.
  • Add it to water rather than water to it, with the stirrer running and below the foam line, or you will spend the shift dealing with foam.

Price

What actually moves the sodium lauryl sulphate price.

Sodium lauryl sulphate is priced off lauryl alcohol, which follows coconut and palm kernel oil, plus sulphur trioxide and caustic soda. Because it ships dry at 90 to 95 per cent active matter, compare it against SLES on active content and delivered cost, not on rupees per kg of product. We quote per kg in writing, landed, with a stated validity.

Questions

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate — what buyers ask us.

What is the difference between SLS and SLES?

SLES is the ethoxylated version — the same fatty-alcohol sulphate with ethylene oxide units added. SLES is milder on skin, thickens with salt and ships as a 70 per cent paste or a 28 per cent pourable liquid. SLS is harsher, foams higher and ships dry at 90 to 95 per cent active matter, which makes it cheaper to freight. Because SLS is not ethoxylated, the 1,4-dioxane by-product route that applies to ethoxylated surfactants does not apply to it; if you are formulating for a market with a 1,4-dioxane limit, say so at the enquiry stage and we will confirm what the producer certifies for the lot.

Is SLS needles or powder better?

Needles flow well, dust less and are easier to handle in bulk; powder dissolves faster and suits dry-blended formulations. The choice is usually about your dosing equipment and dust control rather than performance in the finished product.

Do you supply liquid SLS?

Tell us the active content and viscosity you need and we will confirm what can be sourced. Liquid SLS is mostly water by weight, so for anything other than a short haul it is usually cheaper to buy the dry grade and dissolve it on site.

Do you supply pharmacopoeial-grade SLS for toothpaste?

Tell us the specification you work to. Needles and powder are typically 90 to 95 per cent active matter, while IP, BP and USP sodium lauryl sulphate assay at not less than 85.0 per cent sodium alkyl sulphates — a different basis. We confirm the grade and its documentation against your specification before you order rather than assume it.

Are you a sodium lauryl sulphate manufacturer?

No — Velora is a bulk supplier and trader, not a manufacturer. SLS is sourced from established surfactant producers and supplied in 25 kg bags.

What is the SLS powder price per kg?

SLS is quoted per kg, landed, and is priced off lauryl alcohol, which follows coconut and palm kernel oil. Because it ships dry at over 90 per cent active, compare it against SLES on active content rather than on rupees per kg of product.

Is SLS the same as sodium laureth sulphate?

No. Sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) is the ethoxylated version — milder, salt-thickening and supplied as a paste. SLS is not ethoxylated, foams higher and ships dry at over 90 per cent active.

What is the HSN code for SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate)?

The HSN code for SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) is 3402 39 00 (Anionic organic surface-active agents — other). This is the line adopted in India under HS 2022; records before January 2022 show 3402 11 90 for the same product. 3402 31 00 is reserved for linear alkylbenzene sulphonic acids and their salts, which SLS is not. The code applies to SLS as a raw material, not put up for retail sale. Source: the Indian customs tariff as listed in the GST HSN directory, checked September 2026.

Documentation

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate — MSDS, COA and what travels with the load.

UN 1325 is the usual entry, but producers do not all classify this material the same way. The classification for your lot is on the safety data sheet and the consignor’s declaration, and that is what the consignment ships under.

We do not publish blank certificates to download. A certificate of analysis belongs to a batch, so a generic one tells you nothing about the material on your vehicle — and the safety data sheet is the producer’s document for the grade actually quoted. Ask and both are emailed, usually the same working day.
