What we supply
Sodium bicarbonate is the mild alkali of the soda family. A solution sits around pH 8.3 almost regardless of strength, against roughly pH 11.5 for soda ash, and that ceiling is why plants choose it: it lifts pH without the risk of overshooting into caustic territory. The number is not buffering in the textbook sense — bicarbonate is amphiprotic, so the pH settles near the mean of its two dissociation constants, about ½(6.35 + 10.33). The ceiling does assume the dissolved carbon dioxide stays in the water: a solution left standing, heated or hard aerated drifts towards carbonate and climbs past 8.3, which is exactly what happens in an aerated ETP basin.
It is a dry, free-flowing white powder that decomposes rather than melts. Heating drives off carbon dioxide and water and leaves soda ash behind — slowly from around 50 °C, faster as the temperature rises, and completely by about 270 °C. Two industries exploit that directly: bakers, who use the gas as a leavening agent, and flue-gas treatment plants, where bicarbonate injected into a hot duct — typically well above 150 °C — decomposes on the spot into a fine, highly reactive soda ash that scrubs sulphur dioxide and hydrogen chloride out of the stream. The same behaviour is why it must be stored dry and cool.
Grades & packing
These are the formats we most commonly supply. Other grades, packing sizes and pack marking are available — ask at the enquiry stage.
| Product | Formula | Grade | HSN | Packing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sodium Bicarbonate | NaHCO₃ | Technical grade | 2836 30 00 | 25 / 50 kg bag |
No tested values are published here. The certificate of analysis for the batch actually loaded travels with the despatch documents, and a representative COA and the safety data sheet go out before any commercial discussion.
Applications
Dry sorbent injection to remove SO2 and HCl from incinerator, boiler and furnace gases.
Buffered pH correction in effluent plants, dye houses and process water, where overshoot has to be avoided.
Leavening agent, rumen buffer and pharmacopoeial uses exist, but these are licensed trades in India and we quote them only as set out below.
Deliming and neutralising in tanneries; neutralising after acid treatment in textile processing.
Dry-powder extinguisher media and mildly abrasive cleaning and blasting media.
Handling & storage
Worth reading before you order rather than after. If any of this is a problem at your site, tell us — it usually changes what we would quote.
Price
Sodium bicarbonate is priced off soda ash, since it is made from it, and moves with soda ash and carbon dioxide costs plus grade and packing. Food grade carries a premium over technical. We quote per kg or per MT in writing, landed at your delivery point, with a stated validity.
Questions
Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) is a mild alkali — around pH 8.3 at one per cent — and acts as a buffer. Soda ash (Na2CO3) is far stronger, around pH 11.5 at the same strength. Bicarbonate is chosen where pH has to be raised without overshooting; soda ash where alkalinity per rupee is what matters.
Yes — baking soda is the common name for sodium bicarbonate. The difference that matters commercially is grade, not name: food-grade material is made and documented to a food specification, technical grade is not.
We list technical grade. Food grade in India sits under the FSSAI regime and pharmacopoeial (IP) material is a drug substance needing a wholesale drug licence, so we will not quote either unless the licensing is in place at both ends. Tell us the end use at the enquiry stage and we will say plainly what we can and cannot supply.
Sodium bicarbonate is quoted per kg or per MT, landed, and is priced off soda ash, so offers carry a stated validity. Food grade costs more than technical grade.
No — Velora is a bulk supplier and trader, not a manufacturer. Sodium bicarbonate is sourced from established Indian soda producers and supplied in 25 and 50 kg bags.
The HSN code for sodium bicarbonate is 2836 30 00 (Sodium hydrogencarbonate (sodium bicarbonate)). Grade does not change the code — technical, food and feed grade sodium bicarbonate all sit on the same line. Documentation
Not classified as a dangerous good for transport, so no TREM card is required. The safety data sheet still applies.
| Document | What it covers for sodium bicarbonate | When you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Product specification | Download the product specification sheet for sodium bicarbonate (PDF) — CAS, formula, grade supplied against, packing, HSN and transport classification. Carries no test results and certifies no batch. | Download now |
| Safety data sheet (MSDS/SDS) | Download the 16-section GHS safety data sheet (PDF) — compiled from PubChem, the ECHA CLP inventory and ILO safety cards. The producer’s sheet for the lot supplied governs and is issued with the consignment. | Download now |
| Representative COA | A producer’s representative certificate of analysis for the grade you specify, obtained at enquiry stage so your QC can assess sodium bicarbonate against your own specification | Before commercial terms |
| Batch COA | Tested values for the batch actually loaded on your vehicle | With despatch documents |
| Technical data sheet | Handling, storage and materials-of-construction guidance | On request |
We do not publish blank certificates to download. A certificate of analysis belongs to a batch, so a generic one tells you nothing about the material on your vehicle — and the safety data sheet is the producer’s document for the grade actually quoted. Ask and both are emailed, usually the same working day.
