What we supply

Ammonium Sulphate in bulk, against a written specification.

Ammonium sulphate is the nitrogen fertiliser people buy for the sulphur. The Fertiliser (Control) Order sets its minimum at 20.6 per cent ammoniacal nitrogen, less than half what urea carries, so on nitrogen alone it loses on freight every time. What it also carries is sulphur — a minimum of 23 per cent under the same schedule, as immediately plant-available sulphate — and sulphur deficiency is now widespread in Indian soils after decades of high-analysis fertilisers that contain none. That is the real reason it moves.

It is almost never made on purpose. The material in the Indian market is a by-product: caprolactam grade comes off nylon-6 production, and steel grade off the ammonia liquor of coke ovens and off pickling lines. The two behave the same agronomically but look different — caprolactam material is the whiter, more uniform crystal, steel material often carries colour and a touch more free acid. The Fertiliser (Control) Order recognises this: against a general free-acidity limit of 0.025 per cent as H2SO4 it allows 0.04 per cent for material obtained from by-product ammonia and by-product gypsum.

Grades & packing

What goes out, and how it is packed.

These are the formats we most commonly supply. Other grades, packing sizes and pack marking are available — ask at the enquiry stage.

Applications

Where ammonium sulphate earns its place.

Nitrogen & sulphur fertiliser

Straight fertiliser and a sulphur carrier in bulk blends and complexes, where supply is regulated (see below).

Fermentation

Nitrogen source in yeast, enzyme, antibiotic and amino-acid fermentation media.

Water treatment

Chloramine formation with chlorine, for a longer-lasting residual in distribution networks.

Textiles & leather

Dye-bath assistant and a component of tanning and retanning liquors.

Flame retardants

Component of fire-retardant treatments for timber, textiles and paper.

Battery & electroplating

Electrolyte component and a source of ammonium ion in plating baths.

Handling & storage

What to get right before the load arrives.

Worth reading before you order rather than after. If any of this is a problem at your site, tell us — it usually changes what we would quote.

Site notes

  • Store in a dry, covered store on pallets. Ammonium sulphate is hygroscopic and sets hard in monsoon humidity; caking is the single most common complaint and it is nearly always a storage problem, not a product one. Keep bags sealed and off damp floors.
  • It is not classified as a dangerous good for transport and is not flammable. It is not an oxidiser either — do not confuse it with ammonium nitrate, which is a different material with a different regulatory position entirely.
  • It is mildly acidic in solution and corrodes mild steel and galvanising over time. Use stainless, lined or plastic handling equipment for solutions, and keep it away from strong alkalis, which liberate ammonia gas from it.
  • On soil it is an acidifying fertiliser — continued use lowers pH, which is useful on alkaline soils and a problem on already acid ones. That is an agronomic decision for your buyer, not a product defect.
  • Supply for agricultural use in India is regulated under the Fertiliser (Control) Order, 1985. Ammonium sulphate is a specified fertiliser in Schedule I, and selling it — wholesale, retail, and on the Order’s own wording for industrial use as well — needs a certificate of registration, with a certificate of source from the supplier. Industrial dealer registration is a separate certificate from wholesale or retail registration, and the same person cannot hold both. Velora holds a certificate of registration under the Order and our registration particulars are provided with the quotation, so tell us the end use at the enquiry stage and the grade and registration position get settled before anything is committed.

Price

What actually moves the ammonium sulphate price.

Ammonium sulphate is a by-product, so its price follows caprolactam and steel production and the availability of imported material rather than any dedicated manufacturing cost. Grade, colour, crystal size and bag versus bulk set the rest. We quote per MT in writing, landed, with a stated validity.

Questions

Ammonium Sulphate — what buyers ask us.

Ammonium sulphate or urea — which is better?

Urea carries about 46 per cent nitrogen against a 20.6 per cent minimum here, so for nitrogen alone urea is cheaper to buy and to freight. Ammonium sulphate wins where the crop or the soil also needs sulphur, because it supplies it as immediately available sulphate, and where an acidifying effect is wanted on alkaline soil. It is a sulphur decision, not a nitrogen one.

What is the difference between caprolactam grade and steel grade?

The process they come off. Caprolactam grade is a by-product of nylon-6 manufacture and is usually the whiter, more uniform crystal; steel grade comes off coke-oven ammonia liquor and pickling lines and often carries colour and slightly more free acid. Agronomically they do the same job.

Are you an ammonium sulphate manufacturer?

No — Velora is a bulk supplier and trader, not a manufacturer. Ammonium sulphate is sourced from established Indian producers and from imported material, and supplied in 50 kg bags and in bulk.

What is the ammonium sulphate price per 50 kg bag?

Ammonium sulphate is a by-product of caprolactam and steel production, so the price follows those industries and the availability of imported material. We quote per MT, landed, with a stated validity.

Is ammonium sulphate the same as ammonium nitrate?

No. They are different chemicals with different regulatory positions — ammonium sulphate is not an oxidiser and is not a controlled explosive precursor. Do not treat handling or storage advice for one as applying to the other.

What is the HSN code for ammonium sulphate?

The HSN code for ammonium sulphate is 3102 21 00 (Ammonium sulphate, nitrogenous fertiliser). Chapter 31 Note 2(a)(iv) puts ammonium sulphate here “whether or not pure”, so caprolactam-grade, steel by-product and chemically pure material all share the code regardless of whether it is used as a fertiliser. Packages of 10 kg gross or less fall under 3105 10 00 instead. The GST rate, unlike the code, does turn on whether the material is clearly not to be used as a fertiliser — confirm the rate with your own tax adviser. Documentation

Ammonium Sulphate — MSDS, COA and what travels with the load.

Not classified as a dangerous good for transport, so no TREM card is required. The safety data sheet still applies.

Safety data sheet (MSDS/SDS)Download the 16-section GHS safety data sheet (PDF) — compiled from PubChem, the ECHA CLP inventory and ILO safety cards. The producer’s sheet for the lot supplied governs and is issued with the consignment.Download now
Representative COAA producer’s representative certificate of analysis for the grade you specify, obtained at enquiry stage so your QC can assess ammonium sulphate against your own specificationBefore commercial terms

We do not publish blank certificates to download. A certificate of analysis belongs to a batch, so a generic one tells you nothing about the material on your vehicle — and the safety data sheet is the producer’s document for the grade actually quoted. Ask and both are emailed, usually the same working day.
