What we supply

Phenol in bulk, against a written specification.

Phenol is the aromatic building block behind two very large downstream chains, and which one dominates depends on where you are standing. Globally most phenol goes to bisphenol-A and from there to polycarbonate and epoxy resins. In India the balance is the other way round: phenol-formaldehyde resins for plywood, laminates and foundry binders are the largest single outlet, with bisphenol-A, caprolactam, alkylphenols and pharmaceutical intermediates such as paracetamol and aspirin behind them. It is made almost entirely by the cumene process, which produces roughly 0.6 tonnes of acetone for every tonne of phenol, fixed by the stoichiometry. Acetone output therefore cannot be set independently: when phenol economics are strong producers run hard and acetone floods the solvent market, and when phenol is weak the cuts tighten acetone even if solvent demand is fine. The two markets are coupled, but not in the same direction.

It melts at about 41 °C, so it is shipped either as crystals and solid in drums or hot as a molten liquid in insulated tanks, and the choice is a handling decision rather than a quality one. Phenol is also a serious poison that is absorbed straight through intact skin. Because it has a local anaesthetic action, a burn can be almost painless while the systemic poisoning proceeds — which is exactly what makes it dangerous to people who have handled other corrosives and think they know what to expect.

Grades & packing

What goes out, and how it is packed.

These are the formats we most commonly supply. Other grades, packing sizes and pack marking are available — ask at the enquiry stage.

Applications

Where phenol earns its place.

Phenolic resins

The largest outlet in India — phenol-formaldehyde resins for plywood, laminates, abrasives and foundry binders.

Bisphenol-A

The largest outlet globally, feeding polycarbonate and epoxy resin production.

Pharmaceutical intermediates

Feedstock for paracetamol, aspirin and other intermediates.

Caprolactam

One of the routes to caprolactam and from there to nylon-6.

Alkylphenols & surfactants

Nonylphenol and octylphenol for surfactants and antioxidants.

Laboratory & disinfection

Reagent and preservative use, and the classical reference substance for disinfectant rating — the phenol coefficient — against which many older standards are still written.

Handling & storage

What to get right before the load arrives.

Worth reading before you order rather than after. If any of this is a problem at your site, tell us — it usually changes what we would quote.

Site notes

  • Phenol is toxic by swallowing, by skin contact and by breathing it (GHS Acute Tox. 3 by all three routes), corrosive to skin (Skin Corr. 1B), a suspected mutagen, and toxic to organs on repeated exposure. Treat any skin contact as a systemic emergency, not as a burn.
  • Skin absorption is the main route of occupational poisoning. A splash over even a modest area can cause central nervous system depression, liver and kidney damage and, in severe cases, death. Because of the anaesthetic effect the person may not feel much.
  • First aid for skin contact is not water. Remove contaminated clothing immediately and decontaminate by irrigating or repeatedly wiping the area with low-molecular-weight polyethylene glycol — PEG 300 or PEG 400 — until there is no detectable phenol odour. PEG is the preferred first-line decontaminant and should be stocked wherever phenol is handled. If none is available use a high-volume deluge shower: small amounts of water merely dilute the phenol and spread the exposed area. Get medical attention in every case, including apparently minor contact, and tell the clinicians it is phenol.
  • Full chemical protection: impervious gloves and suit, face shield over goggles, and respiratory protection wherever vapour or molten material is handled. An emergency shower and eyewash within seconds of the working position, not across the yard, and PEG 300 or 400 stocked at the point of use.
  • Transport classification depends on the form: UN 1671 phenol, solid; UN 2312 phenol, molten; UN 2821 phenol, solutions — all Class 6.1, packing group II (packing group III for weak solutions). Molten phenol is carried hot in insulated tanks and carries a thermal burn hazard on top of everything else.
  • Store away from oxidisers and strong acids and bases, out of sunlight and under nitrogen where colour matters — phenol pinks on exposure to air and light, normally without a commercially meaningful loss of assay. It is combustible but not readily ignited.
  • It is harmful to aquatic life and tainting at very low concentrations. Never allow spillage or washings to reach a drain or watercourse; phenolic effluent needs its own treatment step.
  • Phenol is a hazardous chemical listed in Schedule 1 of the Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemical Rules, 1989. In Gujarat it is scheduled above 3 per cent concentration under the Poisons (Regulation and Control of Sale and Use of Acid) Rules, 2014 — so all commercial-strength material is caught — and selling it or holding it for sale requires a licence in Form A held by the seller, with every sale recorded against the purchaser’s government photo identity. Velora holds that Form A licence, and our licence particulars are provided with the quotation. We quote only where the licence position can be documented at both ends.

Price

What actually moves the phenol price.

Phenol comes out of the cumene process together with acetone, so its price is tied to benzene and propylene, and the acetone side of the market moves inversely rather than with it. Solid in drums against molten in insulated tanks changes the logistics cost materially. We quote per kg or per MT in writing, landed, with a stated validity.

Questions

Phenol — what buyers ask us.

Is phenol the same as the phenyl used for cleaning floors?

No — they are different products and the names being similar causes real confusion. “Phenyl” sold as a household floor cleaner in India is an emulsion: white phenyl is based on pine oil, black phenyl on coal-tar oils and tar acids. Phenol, or carbolic acid, is an industrial chemical classified as toxic and corrosive to skin. We supply industrial phenol, not a cleaning product, and the two should never be substituted for one another.

Do you supply solid or molten phenol?

Both forms are traded — solid crystals and slabs in drums, and molten phenol in insulated tanks. Which suits you depends on whether you have heated storage and on your consumption rate. Tell us your offtake and we will say which makes sense.

Why does phenol turn pink?

Air and light oxidise traces of it to coloured quinones. It is a cosmetic change that does not usually affect assay, but it matters where the finished product must be water-white, which is why colour-critical material is stored under nitrogen and out of sunlight.

Are you a phenol manufacturer?

No — Velora is a bulk supplier and trader, not a manufacturer. Phenol is sourced from established producers and importers and supplied in ISO tanks and 225 kg drums.

What is the phenol price per kg?

Phenol is produced with acetone in the cumene process, so its price is tied to benzene and propylene and to the acetone market. Solid in drums against molten in insulated tanks also changes the landed cost. We quote in writing with a stated validity.

Where do I get the phenol MSDS?

The safety data sheet comes from the producer of the specific lot, and we send it with the offer rather than publishing a generic one — classification and emergency advice must match the material you actually receive.

What is the HSN code for phenol (carbolic acid)?

The HSN code for phenol (carbolic acid) is 2907 11 10 (Phenol, as pure carbolic acid). The Indian tariff describes this line as “phenol, as pure carbolic acid”, with 2907 11 90 as the residual. Aqueous phenol solutions stay in 2907 11; crude coal-tar phenols, which are not separate chemically defined compounds, are classified in Chapter 27 instead. Confirm the heading with your own tax adviser. Source: the Indian customs tariff as listed in the GST HSN directory, checked September 2026.

Documentation

Phenol — MSDS, COA and what travels with the load.

The entry depends on the form and grade — UN 1671, UN 2312, UN 2821 all apply to material of this type. The classification for your lot is on the safety data sheet and the consignor’s declaration, and that is what the consignment ships under.

We do not publish blank certificates to download. A certificate of analysis belongs to a batch, so a generic one tells you nothing about the material on your vehicle — and the safety data sheet is the producer’s document for the grade actually quoted. Ask and both are emailed, usually the same working day.
