What we supply

Methanol in bulk, against a written specification.

Methanol is the simplest alcohol and one of the largest-volume chemical feedstocks in the world. Most of what India consumes goes into formaldehyde, and from there into phenolic and urea-formaldehyde resins for plywood and laminates; the rest splits between acetic acid, biodiesel transesterification, solvent use and fuel blending. India imports the great majority of it, so the price here tracks international contracts, natural gas and freight rather than any domestic production cost.

It looks and smells like ethanol and behaves nothing like it. Methanol is severely poisonous — the body converts it to formic acid, which attacks the optic nerve, so a small swallowed volume causes blindness and a slightly larger one kills, often after a deceptive delay of hours in which the person feels merely drunk. This is not a theoretical hazard in India: methanol adulteration of illicit liquor has caused repeated mass-casualty poisonings, including in Gujarat. Everything about how this product is sold, documented and stored follows from that.

Grades & packing

What goes out, and how it is packed.

These are the formats we most commonly supply. Other grades, packing sizes and pack marking are available — ask at the enquiry stage.

No tested values are published here. The certificate of analysis for the batch actually loaded travels with the despatch documents, and a representative COA and the safety data sheet go out before any commercial discussion.

Applications

Where methanol earns its place.

Formaldehyde

The dominant use — feedstock for formaldehyde and from there for phenolic, urea- and melamine-formaldehyde resins.

Biodiesel

Transesterification of vegetable oils and fats with a caustic or methoxide catalyst.

Solvent

Extraction, crystallisation and cleaning solvent in pharmaceutical and chemical manufacture.

Chemical intermediate

Acetic acid, MTBE, methylamines, methyl methacrylate and dimethyl ether.

Fuel blending

Blend component and a fuel in its own right, under the applicable state and central fuel rules.

Antifreeze & gas drying

Hydrate inhibition in gas pipelines and windscreen and de-icing formulations.

Handling & storage

What to get right before the load arrives.

Site notes

  • Methanol is toxic by swallowing, by skin absorption and by breathing the vapour (GHS Acute Tox. 3 by all three routes, and STOT SE 1 — it causes damage to organs). Skin contact is a real exposure route, not a minor one. Nitrile gloves, chemical goggles, and vapour control wherever it is decanted or transferred.
  • Suspected methanol ingestion is a medical emergency even when the person appears fine. The toxic metabolites take hours to build, and by the time vision is affected the injury may be permanent. Do not induce vomiting. Get the person to hospital immediately and tell the clinicians it is methanol — there are specific antidotes, and treatment is time-critical.
  • For skin contact, remove contaminated clothing and wash the area with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes. For eye contact, rinse with running water for at least 15 minutes, holding the eyelids open. Seek medical attention after either, and after any significant vapour exposure.
  • It is a highly flammable liquid, UN 1230, Class 3 with a subsidiary 6.1 toxic risk, packing group II. The flash point is around 11 °C, so it gives off an ignitable vapour at ordinary Indian ambient temperatures — every day of the year. Bond and earth all transfer equipment, use non-sparking tools, and keep ignition sources out of the transfer area.
  • The flame burns with almost no visible colour in daylight. A methanol fire can be burning in front of you and not be seen; train the people who handle it on that, and use alcohol-resistant foam rather than ordinary AFFF, which the alcohol breaks down.
  • It mixes with water in all proportions, so a spill spreads and dilutes rather than sitting still — contain it before it reaches a drain. Store in a cool, well-ventilated, bunded area away from oxidisers and acids.
  • Methanol in Gujarat is licensed under the Gujarat Methyl Alcohol Rules, 1981, made under section 143(1) of the Bombay Prohibition Act, 1949: import, possession and sale run on M.A. class licences, and a licensed dealer may sell only to a holder of a valid M.A. licence. Methanol is not listed in the schedule to the Gujarat Poisons (Regulation and Control of Sale and Use of Acid) Rules, 2014, and the Gujarat High Court has held that the Poisons Act and the Methyl Alcohol Rules operate in different spheres. The position is moving — in September 2026 the Supreme Court struck down Maharashtra’s methanol colourant, bitterant and blanket licensing rules as disproportionate — so we confirm the current licence position at both ends before quoting rather than working from what was true last year.
  • That licence requirement binds the seller as much as the buyer. Velora holds the M.A. licence required to supply methanol, and our licence particulars are provided with the quotation. We quote only where the position can be documented at both ends, against an end-use declaration from an identified buyer. We do not quote undocumented buyers, we do not supply into any beverage or potable channel, and we will decline an order rather than let this material reach a supply chain we cannot see the end of.

Price

What actually moves the methanol price.

Methanol is overwhelmingly imported into India, so the price follows international contracts, natural gas, the exchange rate and freight. Drum versus ISO tank, delivery point and the documentation the consignment needs set the rest. We quote per kg or per MT in writing, landed, with a stated validity.

Questions

Methanol — what buyers ask us.

Is methanol the same as ethanol or spirit?

No, and the confusion is lethal. Ethanol is drinking alcohol; methanol is a poison that causes blindness and death, and the body gives no useful warning — the early symptoms resemble ordinary drunkenness. Never use the words “alcohol” or “spirit” loosely for methanol, and never store it in anything that has held a drink.

What is methanol used for in industry?

In India the largest use by far is formaldehyde, which goes on into plywood and laminate resins. After that come biodiesel, acetic acid and other intermediates, pharmaceutical and chemical solvent use, and fuel blending.

Do you sell methanol to individuals?

No. Sale is licensed and we supply documented industrial buyers only, against an end-use declaration. Given how methanol has been misused in India we treat this as non-negotiable rather than as paperwork.

Are you a methanol manufacturer?

No — Velora is a bulk supplier and trader, not a manufacturer. Methanol is sourced from established producers and importers and supplied in ISO tanks and 163 kg drums.

What is the methanol price per litre in India?

Methanol is overwhelmingly imported, so the price follows international contracts, natural gas, the exchange rate and freight rather than a domestic production cost. We quote per kg or per MT, landed, with a stated validity.

Can I buy methanol without a licence?

No. Possession for sale and sale are licensed in Gujarat, and we supply documented industrial buyers against an end-use declaration only. Methanol is a poison that has caused repeated mass casualties in India through misuse, and we treat the documentation as the point, not the paperwork.

What is the HSN code for methanol (methyl alcohol)?

The HSN code for methanol (methyl alcohol) is 2905 11 00 (Methanol (methyl alcohol)). Source: the Indian customs tariff as listed in the GST HSN directory, checked September 2026.

Documentation

Methanol — MSDS, COA and what travels with the load.

Shipped as a dangerous good under UN 1230. A TREM card travels on the vehicle.

Safety data sheet (MSDS/SDS)Download the 16-section GHS safety data sheet (PDF) — compiled from PubChem, the ECHA CLP inventory and ILO safety cards. The producer’s sheet for the lot supplied governs and is issued with the consignment.Download now
Representative COAA producer’s representative certificate of analysis for the grade you specify, obtained at enquiry stage so your QC can assess methanol against your own specificationBefore commercial terms

We do not publish blank certificates to download. A certificate of analysis belongs to a batch, so a generic one tells you nothing about the material on your vehicle — and the safety data sheet is the producer’s document for the grade actually quoted. Ask and both are emailed, usually the same working day.
